Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people experience little to no discomfort. Some sensations that you may experience could be a slight numbness or tingling similar to a small electrical shock. Sensations vary depending on where on the body the needle is being inserted. Some people and some parts of the body are more than others and we pay close attention to how our patients are responding and strive to make their experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible.
What if I’m scared of needles?
Acupuncture needles are very different than hypodermic needles. We use extremely thin needles (picture 2 or 3 hairs thick) and instead of being hollow they are solid which means they slide through the skin instead of tearing it which makes for a much more comfortable experience.
Are the needles safe?
We use sterile, single use needles that are packaged individually. At each treatment you will see us open the sealed packages of acupuncture needles that we will use for only you. After their one time use the needles go into a sharps container, just like at your doctor’s office.
Are there side effects?
I would say that the most common side effect I have seen is an occasional bruise where an acupuncture needle was. Anytime the skin is penetrated there is a risk of infection, but with acupuncture that risk is extremely small. As mentioned previously, our needles are sterile and single use only. We swab the skin with alcohol swabs before performing acupuncture and you’ll see us using hand sanitizer frequently while you’re in our office. A more common side effect I frequently see is a good night’s rest.
How many treatments will I need?
This is a question that can be better answered during the first treatment. Each person and their condition are different. Acupuncture uses a whole person approach which means five different patients suffering from migraines could have five completely different treatment approaches. People have unique conditions and underlying conditions. With that being said, we will do our absolute best to get you up and back to your old self as fast as we possibly can.
Do you accept insurance?
Unfortunately, we do not. The few insurance companies that do cover acupuncture typically only cover acupuncture services for very specific conditions only. We have chosen to not accept insurance so that we can offer specific pricing without any surprise charges stemming from the refusal of insurance companies to pay. We know that medical expenses can add up without insurance so we offer package prices for patients that require multiple visits. You can find information on our package prices under our cost page.
